WALLKILL VALLEY RAIL TRAIL
This project’s focus is to develop a Plan that transforms what is today an active rail trail through the New Paltz community into a vibrant, accessible transportation/recreation corridor. The Plan will address needed improvements to the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail within the study area necessary to make this space a more functional transportation resource, well connected to other components of the transportation system, and respectful of adjoining land uses. The Plan will define options to optimize multimodal active transport, open space and recreation on the heavily used part of the trail.

Shumaker Consulting Engineering and Land Surveying, D.P.C. (SCE) provided neighborhood characteristics, which included research for land ownership and a comprehensive analysis of public lands and easements. SCE also determined the hydrologic characteristics of the trail corridor and surrounding areas, including general site drainage, condition and adequacy of existing storm drainage facilities, seasonal characteristics, flood zones, and identification of State and Federal wetlands. SCE identified sensitive resources and habitats of local, state, or national significance including significant topographic / geologic features. SCE also identified any known utilities within the project area that risked interfering with the eventual trail and park development.
